I haven’t nursed a babe since May of 2012 but I still remember that soft, nurturing, (sometimes squirmy!) sweetness.  It’s a feeling I never want to forget!

The Story of Ataensic

In the mythology of the Iroquois and Huron of North America, the Woman Who Fell From the Sky is a primal ancestor. Also known as Sky Woman or Ataensic, she plays a central role in creation.

According to legend, the Woman Who Fell From the Sky lived in a world above the sky. One day she became pregnant and fell out of heaven. Some stories say that she fell while chasing a bear, while others say that the tree of life was uprooted and she tumbled through the hole left behind.

As the woman fell, ducks flew beneath her to slow her descent. She landed in a vast watery place, with no land in sight. Turtle arose from the water and let her rest on his back. Meanwhile, Muskrat dove beneath the water and brought up mud to form the earth. Soon after, the woman gave birth to twin sons—one good and one evil—who created all the natural features of the earth and sky. According to some stories, she gave birth to a daughter, and that woman was the mother of the twins.

Here is a piece I did for my second daughter’s birth.  She was born in the water at Mountain Midwifery Birth Center.  Her birth was amazing!  If you’d like to read all about her birth story you can visit my sister doula website here.  You can also watch a video of her birth below:

When I was looking at a shell one day I counted all the tiny segments and realized there were exactly forty compartments.  That made me think of how babies grow in utero, spin, change positions, and are born.

This piece was commissioned to be a gift for a wonderful OB here who offers mamas the opportunity to birth their breech babies vaginally.  The dolphins were included because dolphins give birth breech, then the “midwife” dolphins take the new babe up to the surface for its first breath.

A big thank you to Dr. Hall!

Yemaya is the Yoruban Orisha or Goddess of the living Ocean, considered the Mother of All. She is the source of all the waters, including the rivers of Western Africa, especially the River Ogun. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means “Mother Whose Children are the Fish”.  When her waters broke it caused the great flood that inundated the world and created the seven seas.  She then gave birth to fourteen powerful orishas.  According to legend, Yemaya is the mother of all life.

As all life is thought to have begun in the Sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. She is said to be able to cure infertility in women, and cowrie shells represent her wealth. It is said when you hold a conch shell to your ear you can hear her voice, which is why I put a cross section of a shell in her belly.

She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered she can be quite destructive and violent, as the Sea in a storm.
