I haven’t nursed a babe since May of 2012 but I still remember that soft, nurturing, (sometimes squirmy!) sweetness.  It’s a feeling I never want to forget!

Rumina is a Roman Goddess of Breastfeeding and Women, who causes the milk to flow. Her name is related to an old Latin word for breast, rumis or ruma, and translates to “the Nourisher”, “She Who Breastfeeds” or “Mother’s Breast”. Rumina was the protectress of all nursing young, human and animal both.  Learn more about Rumina here.

This is a piece done for a friend of mine who had a cesarean.  The flowers around the outside are orange blossoms (which neroli aromatherapy is from) and echinacea to symbolize healing.  The poem, by Karyn Peabody who also had a cesarean, reads as follows:

A Birth Story for Asher

You were not born in the way that I had intended.

We did not meet in the way that I had hoped.

You cried with confusion and hunger.
I cried with confusion and pain.

We returned to our cocoon together.
When we emerged – transformed.

Beautiful and with delight.

For we had fallen in love in the way I had dreamed.

This is another commission I just finished for a wonderful midwife. She wanted to incorporate a pregnant figure pendant her preceptor had given her, a nursing mama, a “squishy baby,” a placenta/tree of life, and a pink lotus.

Any suggestions for a title?

Here is a portrait I was commissioned to do by my good friend Brittany nursing her daughter.  I think it’s a really touching picture!  The pink and white flowers around the inside are Goat’s Rue, a common galactogogue (breastmilk production enricher).
