This is the second piece in my “Seasons” series representing four seasons of womanhood.  Summer solstice, the journey to becoming a mother, with a warm summer glow through the branches.  In the original piece has bright gold metallic paint that shines (which is difficult to capture in the artwork scan).  This piece is truly luminous!  One of my favorites.

Here you can almost see the glow:

This piece was done for the Genital Autonomy Symposium.  It is my belief that every human being has a right to decide for themselves what should be done with and to their own bodies.  The red hamsa is a symbol of protection of this right.  The lotus reminds us that children are born perfect, just as they are.

I haven’t nursed a babe since May of 2012 but I still remember that soft, nurturing, (sometimes squirmy!) sweetness.  It’s a feeling I never want to forget!

Yemaya is the Yoruban Orisha or Goddess of the living Ocean, considered the Mother of All. She is the source of all the waters, including the rivers of Western Africa, especially the River Ogun. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means “Mother Whose Children are the Fish”.  When her waters broke it caused the great flood that inundated the world and created the seven seas.  She then gave birth to fourteen powerful orishas.  According to legend, Yemaya is the mother of all life.

As all life is thought to have begun in the Sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. She is said to be able to cure infertility in women, and cowrie shells represent her wealth. It is said when you hold a conch shell to your ear you can hear her voice, which is why I put a cross section of a shell in her belly.

She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered she can be quite destructive and violent, as the Sea in a storm.

Oya is the Yorubian Warrior Goddess of the Wind who also birthed nine children.  I really like her because she’s fierce and strong but also has a powerful mothering side.  She is the goddess of  lightening, tornadoes, wind, and female leadership. She is represented in breastfeeding images and usually carries a sword.  Her motherly strength inspires us to embrace change and learn from it.
